PRACTICE PROFILE
Widcombe Surgery is situated in the City of Bath on the southern side of the river. The practice was founded in 1860 as a single handed practice and has since grown to become a three and three quarter partner practice as well as being a training practice. The surgery moved in 1996 to a newly converted building in the heart of Widcombe. The surgery is one of 13 practices in Bath and takes patients from anywhere within the City boundaries.
THE SURGERY AND HOW TO USE IT
The surgery is open from 8.30am and 6.00pm on weekdays. We run an emergency surgery on weekdays from 8.30am – 10.30am when you may be seen without an appointment. The purpose of the emergency surgery is for patients who urgently need to be seen on the same day when there are no appointments available. It is not appropriate for patients to attend to request sickness certificates or repeat medication. It is not appropriate for long standing problems which may require a longer appointment slot. It is not possible to specify which doctor you will see at the emergency surgery.
Saturday Mornings - As part of the extended hours in response to our patient Questionnaire, we are now opening the surgery on Saturday mornings from 8.00am to 11.00am. This session is intended for patients who are usable to attend during the working week. The is strictly an appointment only session and appointments must be booked before the day. PLEASE DO NOT attend the surgery on a Saturday morning if you do not have an appointment as you will not be seen.
The existing out of hours number is still in place if you need to see a G.P. - Out of hours Tel: 01980 626226
THE PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TEAM
The Practice Team is headed by the Practice Manager, Mrs Linda Newman, who co-ordinates and manages the running of the surgery. She is supported by an assistant Practice Manager, Sue Matthews, and five part-time receptionists. The practice secretary is able to deal with any problems you may have with referrals.
PRACTICE NURSES
There are at present two Practice Sisters providing a full range of nursing care, including dressings, ear syringing, suture removal, cervical smears and blood taking. They also monitor conditions such as diabetes, asthma and high blood pressure, and may advise on a variety of aspects of diet and health as well as a travel clinic and smoking cessation advice. If you need any of these services please ask for an appointment at reception.
OTHER MEMBERS OF THE PRIMARY HEALTHCARE TEAM
HEALTH VISITOR
She provides special support, supervision and advice, e.g. for children under 5, the elderly and bereavement. Our Health Visitor also runs the childhood immunisation clinic. She can be contacted on 01225 460899. There is an answer phone if the Health Visitor is not available.
COMMUNITY NURSES
The District Nurses provide a domiciliary nursing service for those who are unable to attend the surgery. They have an office here at the surgery and can be contacted direct on 01225 465731. There is an answer phone if the Community Nurses are not available.
THE MIDWIFE
The practice midwife holds a weekly clinic at the surgery to provide help and advice during and shortly after pregnancy. If you need to see the midwife please speak to the receptionist who will advise you.
PATIENT TRANSPORT
Transport is available to bring patients to and from the surgery. A donation of £5.00 per return journey (£4.00 one way) is requested. In addition patients attending hospital appointments can also request transport. We cannot guarantee a return trip, this depends on the time of day. Again a donation of £5.00 is requested.
To book either of the above services please call 01225 310883 / 312387
